Iraqiya ready to lead, Sadr says

DAMASCUS, Syria, July 20 (UPI) — Leaders of the Iraqiya slate in Iraq are ready to offer concessions to end the political stalemate in Iraq, anti-American cleric Moqtada Sadr said in Damascus.

Former interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi narrowly won the March 7 elections in Iraq, though none of the leading coalitions secured the 163-seat majority needed to form a new government alone.

Iraqi leaders have been unable to form a ruling coalition due in part to disagreements over a second term for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, whose State of Law slate lost to Iraqiya by just two seats.

During meetings with top Iraqi leaders in Damascus, Sadr said Iraqiya had the ambition needed to form a new government.

”Our brothers in the Iraqiya bloc have a project to serve the Iraqi people and to offer some concessions to end the political crisis in Iraq to reach a solution to the complicated process,” he was quoted in the official Syrian Arab News Agency as saying.

Lawmakers loyal to Sadr took roughly 10 percent of the March 7 vote, positioning Sadr as an influential figure in the Iraqi political scene.

Allawi, for his part, said the members of his secular coalition looked forward to removing the final obstacles to forming a new government in Baghdad.

”We are committed to it based on our commitment to the constitution,” he said.

Iraqi leaders are busy debating nominations for top Cabinet positions. Sadr, meanwhile, said the meeting was “fruitful,” adding the political crisis would end soon for the benefit of the Iraqi people.
